Wired Buttons
Wired doorbell buttons look simple, but the right replacement depends on more than finish alone. The best fit usually comes down to mounting style, overall size, hole spacing, and whether the button needs to be lighted or non-lighted.
Filter by finish, shape, and mounting style to narrow decorative wired buttons fast.
Start with finish and shape, then use mounting style and dimensions to narrow the button that fits your entry best.

Wired doorbell buttons look simple, but the right replacement depends on more than finish alone. The best fit usually comes down to mounting style, overall size, hole spacing, and whether the button needs to be lighted or non-lighted.
A surface-mount button is often the easiest replacement when you are working over an existing flat area. A flush or recessed button matters more when the opening is already cut into trim, brick molding, or siding and you want the new plate to sit cleanly.
Lighted buttons help in darker covered entries and are common on transformer-powered systems. Non-lighted buttons make more sense when the entry is already well lit or when you are trying to avoid extra draw on a small or battery-based setup.
If you are replacing an older button, measure first. A few minutes spent checking the face size and mounting holes prevents most returns in this category.
Before ordering a replacement button
- Check the mounting style: surface, flush, or recessed
- Measure the footprint: especially on narrow trim or brick molding
- Confirm hole spacing: older buttons vary more than most people expect
- Decide on lighting: lighted for visibility, non-lighted for simplicity
One door or more than one?
Most wired buttons here serve a single door. If your entrance serves two or three units, you want a multi-door station: one plate with a separate button and name plate for each unit, so each button can ring its own chime. Use the Door Count filter to see only those, or go straight to the BC203 two-family brass plate, the BC268 two-family lighted plate, or the BC208 three-family plate.

Buttons for duplexes, triplexes and small apartment entries
A shared front door needs one button per unit, and the usual fix of screwing two or three separate buttons to the casing looks untidy and leaves visitors guessing. A multi-door station solves both problems. Each button has its own two screw terminals on the back, so it wires to its own chime exactly like a single button would, and the name plate under each button tells the visitor whose bell it is.
- Two units, unlighted: the Lee BC203. Brass plate, two black buttons, two name plate pockets, up to 16V. Works with any wired chime, including electronic chimes, because there is no lamp.
- Two units, lighted: the Lee BC268 in gold or silver. Two white lighted buttons and two lens-covered name windows, up to 16V. Pair it with mechanical chimes.
- Three units: the Lee BC208 in polished brass or polished chrome. Three black buttons, three name plate pockets, rated up to 24V.
- One unit, labeled: the Lee BC267LG puts a lighted button and a name plate on one small gold plate, for a single apartment door or a labeled side entrance.
Each button only needs its own pair of wires back to its chime. One transformer can feed two or three mechanical chimes if it has the capacity; see how to wire two door chimes to one transformer, and pick a transformer with headroom such as the T1615 16V 15VA or the DH910 tri-volt. If each unit already has its own transformer and chime, each button simply drops into that unit's existing circuit. For the full walk-through, read doorbell buttons for duplexes and multi-unit entrances.
Replacing a single lighted button on a tight frame? The BC293LSS is only ¾" wide, the BC264LC is a 2" chrome square with no visible screws, and the BC205B is the 5/8" center insert for a plate you want to keep.
Helpful replacement notes
If the goal is a clean swap, the dimensions matter as much as the style. Our wired push button measurements page can help you compare sizes before ordering. If you are also replacing the indoor chime, browse our wired doorbells or get help through customer help.
Wired doorbell button styles and fit

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a wired push button will fit?
Check the mounting style, outside dimensions, and screw-hole spacing. Surface-mount buttons sit on the wall, while recessed or flush buttons need an opening that matches the button body.
Can I replace only the wired doorbell button?
Yes, if the chime and transformer still work. A wired push button is usually a separate low-voltage switch, so you can replace a worn or dated button without replacing the entire doorbell system.
Why does my lighted wired button stay on?
Most lighted wired buttons use a small lamp or LED that stays lit so the button is visible at night. If the chime buzzes, hums, or does not ring correctly, check transformer and chime compatibility.
Can two apartments share one doorbell button?
Do I need a separate transformer for each unit?
No. One doorbell transformer can run two or three mechanical chimes as long as its VA rating covers them. A 16V 10VA transformer is marginal for two chimes; a 15VA or 30VA unit gives headroom. If each unit already has its own transformer, keep them: each button on the station is an independent switch and simply goes in series with its own unit's circuit.
Which multi-door button works with an electronic chime?
Where do the name cards go?
Each multi-door station has a pocket or window under each button. On the BC203 and BC208 the pocket is an open metal slot that takes a strip of card stock or a printed label, and it covers the mounting screw head. On the BC268 the window is a clear lens with a white card behind it, held by a snap-in carrier on the back. Name cards are not printed for you; most people use a label maker or a printed strip.
