Is this the right fit?
- Good fit when
- Use this when a wired doorbell, chime, or compatible video doorbell needs the listed low-voltage power supply.
- Look at another option when
- It is not needed for wireless-only systems, and it should not be guessed at when the existing wiring or voltage is unknown.
- Mounting and fit
- Doorbell transformers mount to a junction box knockout, an electrical panel, or a plug-in outlet depending on the model. Note where the current transformer sits and how its low-voltage side reaches the chime before ordering a replacement.
- Setup note
- Confirm voltage and VA requirements before ordering. Turn off power before wiring, and use a qualified electrician when the transformer is inside an electrical box or panel.
Craftmade T1615 16V 15VA Doorbell Transformer for Long Wire Runs and Two-Chime Homes
The Craftmade T1615 is a 16-volt, 15VA (15-watt) chime transformer that steps standard 120V household current down to the low voltage a wired doorbell needs. It looks almost identical to the popular Craftmade T1610, mounts the same way, and delivers the same 16 volts. The difference is the power behind it: 15VA instead of 10VA. That extra 50% of capacity is what keeps a chime ringing strong when the wire run is long, when a second chime is added, or when lighted push buttons are drawing power around the clock.
T1615 vs. T1610: Why Choose the 15VA Transformer?
The Craftmade T1610 16V 10VA transformer is the most common replacement we sell, and for a single chime with a short wire run and an unlit button, it is all you need. Voltage tells you how hard the transformer pushes; the VA rating tells you how much total load it can carry before the output starts to sag. A 10VA transformer has very little headroom. Once you ask it to do more than ring one chime a short distance away, the voltage at the chime drops and the plungers strike weakly, buzz, or do not ring at all.
Choose the T1615 over the T1610 when any of the following apply:
- Long wire runs (over 50 feet): Thin 18- or 20-gauge doorbell wire loses voltage over distance. The T1610 is recommended for runs up to about 50 feet; the T1615 has the reserve to overcome that loss on longer runs, common in larger homes, basements, and detached garages.
- Two chimes on one system: Adding a second chime upstairs or at the back of the house roughly doubles the load when the button is pressed. Craftmade specifies the T1615 for dual-chime applications, making it the right match for kits like the CK2002 Craftmade two-chime doorbell kit.
- Lighted push buttons: Every lighted button, such as the PB5005 Craftmade lighted push button, draws a small current 24 hours a day. Two lighted buttons on a 10VA transformer leave very little left over for the chime itself.
- Weak, buzzing, or inconsistent rings: If your current chime sounds tired even though the wiring checks out, an undersized transformer is a common cause. Stepping up to 15VA often restores a crisp, full tone.
Because the T1615 operates further below its maximum rating than a 10VA unit doing the same job, it also runs cooler, which is easier on the transformer over years of continuous service.
Wired Doorbells That Pair Well with the T1615
The T1615 works with any 16V wired door chime. It is a strong choice for larger, louder, or more feature-rich chimes, including:
- CL4000 Craftmade curved loud wired door chime, built to be heard throughout a large home.
- CTPW Craftmade wired chime with pewter tubes, a resonant tube chime that rewards steady, full-strength power.
- ICH1735 Craftmade LED-illuminated chime, a lighted chime with added load from its LEDs.
- CK2000-W Craftmade door chime kit with two buttons, for front and back door setups.
- CH1000 Craftmade narrow-profile wired doorbell, a simple chime that gains extra reliability on long runs.

When You Need More Than 15VA
The T1615 is sized for one chime on a long run or two chimes. If you are powering three chimes, several lighted buttons on a very long run, or a video doorbell, step up to the Craftmade T1630 16V 30VA transformer. Most video doorbells call for 30VA or more, so always confirm the requirement from your video doorbell's manufacturer before choosing a transformer.
Installation Overview
The T1615 is indoor (dry location) rated and mounts to an electrical junction box, typically near your electrical panel, furnace, or the existing transformer location. The 120V primary leads connect to household power, and the low-voltage screw terminals connect to your doorbell wire. Because the T1615 shares the same 16V output as the T1610, it is a direct upgrade: no changes are needed at the chime or buttons. Always turn off power at the breaker before working on the line-voltage side, and consult a licensed electrician if you are not comfortable working with 120V wiring.

Q&A
Product FAQs & Customer Q&A
Answers from our team for T1615 Craftmade 16V 15VA Wired Doorbell Transformer.
What VA doorbell transformer do I need?
Start with the voltage your chime calls for, then pick enough VA (capacity) for the load. A 16V 10VA transformer is usually enough for one chime, one unlit button and a normal wire run. Step up to 15VA, like the T1615 16V 15VA transformer, for two chimes, lighted buttons, or wire runs over about 50 feet. Video doorbells usually need more, so check the doorbell maker's VA range. A transformer with a little more VA than needed causes no trouble; one with too little does.

Do video doorbells need a 16V or a 24V transformer?
Use a voltage that both the video doorbell and the chime accept. Many video doorbells list a range such as 16-24V AC, but many wired chimes are rated for 16V, so a 24V transformer can be wrong for the chime even when the doorbell accepts it. When the chime is 16V, stay at 16V and add VA instead. More VA does not fix a voltage mismatch. Our video doorbell transformer guide goes through it step by step.

Where is my doorbell transformer?
It depends on where the installer put it. Common spots are the garage (near the electrical panel or the garage door opener), the basement or utility area near the panel or furnace, the attic on a rafter or junction box, and inside the wall behind or under the chime box. Following the thin bell wire from the chime often leads to it. See I can't find my doorbell transformer for more places to look.

Can one transformer run two chimes?
Yes, if it has enough VA. A second chime roughly doubles the load when the button is pressed, and a 10VA transformer has little headroom for that. A 16V 15VA transformer such as the T1615 is made for two-chime systems, and the DH910 tri-volt transformer powers up to two low-voltage devices. Both chimes must also be rated for the transformer's voltage.

How can I tell if my doorbell transformer is failing or too small?
Common signs are a chime that buzzes or hums, a weak or partial ding, no ring at all, a transformer that runs hot, or a video doorbell that drops offline or reports low power. A multimeter on the transformer's low-voltage terminals will show whether the output is near its rated voltage. The input side is connected to household power, so turn off the breaker before working on it, or have an electrician replace it.
