Doorbell Transformers & Wire

Installing a Ring, Nest, Lorex, or other video doorbell? A standard 16V 10VA doorbell transformer is usually fine for a basic wired chime, but video doorbells can pull enough steady load to overload an older low-VA transformer.

Doorbell transformer

Installing a Ring, Nest, Lorex, or other video doorbell? A standard 16V 10VA doorbell transformer is usually fine for a basic wired chime, but video doorbells can pull enough steady load to overload an older low-VA transformer. For most video doorbell installs that keep the wired chime in the circuit, we usually recommend the T1630 16V 30VA doorbell transformer because it keeps the system at 16V while giving it more available VA. Read the full video doorbell transformer guide.

This category covers the low-voltage parts behind a reliable wired doorbell system: transformers, wire, and installation basics. When a wired chime hums, sounds weak, or stops working after a hardware change, the transformer is often part of the problem.

The two numbers most shoppers need to understand are voltage and VA. Voltage has to match the needs of the doorbell or chime. VA tells you how much load the transformer can support. In practical terms, higher-demand systems such as longer wire runs, multiple push buttons, some musical chimes, or video doorbells often need more capacity than a small standard transformer can provide.

For a basic wired doorbell with one or two standard buttons, a smaller transformer may be enough. When the system is larger or more demanding, stepping up to a higher-VA option is usually the better move. Being too small causes more trouble than being slightly oversized on the VA side.

When a heavier-duty transformer makes sense

  • Longer wire runs between transformer, button, and chime
  • Multiple buttons or chimes on one system
  • Video doorbells or camera doorbells with higher draw
  • Weak or inconsistent chime performance from an undersized transformer
