What’s the difference between PIR and magnetic sensors?
PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors detect any heat-emitting movement including vehicles, people, and large animals. They’re ideal for comprehensive security. Magnetic probe sensors only detect metal mass from vehicles, making them perfect when you only want vehicle alerts without false alarms from foot traffic or wildlife.
How far can wireless driveway alarms transmit?
Transmission range varies by model. Our systems offer ranges from 400 feet for basic residential needs up to 1 mile or more for large properties. The Dakota Alert 4000 series can reach up to 1 mile, while some systems like Safeguard Supply’s long-range kits can achieve up to 4,000 feet of reliable transmission.
Can I add multiple sensors to one receiver?
Yes! Most of our receiver units support multiple sensors (typically 4-16 zones). This allows you to monitor multiple entry points, differentiate between locations with unique chimes, and expand your system as needed. Check individual product specifications for zone capacity.
Are these systems weatherproof?
All outdoor sensor components are weatherproof and designed to withstand rain, snow, and temperature extremes. Indoor receivers should be kept in protected areas. Sensors typically operate in temperatures from -30°F to 120°F, making them suitable for most climates.
Do I need professional installation?
Most of our driveway alarm systems are designed for DIY installation. PIR sensors mount on posts or trees, rubber hoses lay across driveways, and magnetic probes require digging a small hole. Basic tools and our detailed instructions are all you need. We also offer phone support if you have questions during installation.
