What’s the difference between wired doorbell pushbuttons & wireless door chime buttons?

Wired Buttons

Wired buttons wire directly to the doorbell transformer using “bell wire.” If you wire a doorbell using batteries vs. a transformer, it wires directly to the doorbell. When visitors push the button, an electrical signal is generated and the chime sounds.

Wireless Buttons

Virtually all wireless buttons use a battery inside the button for power supply. When a visitor pushes the button, it sends a radio wave signal to a compatible receiver. A signal is generated and transmitted wirelessly.

Can I mix & match wired doorbell buttons & wireless pushbuttons?

Not in a literal sense. Wireless buttons send a radio signal to a compatible receiver, while wired ones close an electrical loop that causes the chime to ring. These are fundamentally different technologies.

The Exception: Doorbell Extenders

You can use a doorbell extender kit that includes a small transmitter wiring into the doorbell transformer. When a visitor pushes the button outside:

A radio signal is generated from the installed transmitter
The signal is sent to a compatible wireless receiver
Your existing wired system continues to function normally
You gain the added benefit of a wireless system
