Door chimes and business doorbells

This article is here to help you choose a door chime that fits the space, the noise level, and the way people actually enter the building. The useful comparisons are range, power source, receiver style, and whether you need sound only or sound plus a visual alert.

This page helps you choose a doorbell by the sounds it plays: a classic wired ding-dong, a handful of tunes, or dozens of melodies with a different one for each door. Every model below is in stock, and you can hear its sounds before you buy on our doorbell and receiver sound library.

How many sounds do you need?

Most people pick one sound and keep it. More sound options matter in three cases:

  • More than one door. Give the front door and the back door different melodies so you know which one to answer.
  • Holidays and parties. Switch to Jingle Bells in December or Happy Birthday for a party, then switch back.
  • Hard to hear. Some tones cut through noise better than others. A sharp tone or a siren is easier to notice in a shop or garage than a soft chime.

Current doorbells by number of sounds

One classic chime: Craftmade wired chimes

A wired chime such as the Craftmade CL4000 plays one classic ding-dong, the standard Craftmade chime. Choose this if you want the traditional sound and already have doorbell wiring. Hear the Craftmade chime sounds.

6 to 13 sounds: Carlon wireless chimes

Hear the Carlon sounds.

12 to 32 melodies: ERA and LRA long-range kits

  • LRA-D1000: 32 melodies, a flashing light, and up to 1,000 ft range. The set includes Westminster, Jingle Bells, Reveille, a dog bark and sirens.
  • LRA-D1000S: plug-in receiver with a strobe, 18 melodies including Big Ben, a door knock and a rooster crow, up to 1,000 ft.
  • ERA-DCKIT: 12 melodies plus beep tones, up to 4,000 ft, for businesses and large properties. The melodies include Fur Elise, Canon in D and the William Tell Overture.

52 to 58 melodies: Safeguard Supply SS Series

  • SS110 wireless doorbell kit: 58 melodies, four volume levels, up to 600 ft range.
  • WC180-SS: the same 58 melodies with a flashing strobe, for hearing-impaired households or loud rooms.
  • SS120 kit: 52 ringtones, four volume levels, up to 600 ft range.

The SS Series set is the widest we carry. It includes several Westminster and ding-dong variations, Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, Let It Snow, Happy Birthday, the William Tell Overture, a barking dog and a “Hello, welcome” greeting. Hear all 58 SS Series sounds.

Holiday and party tunes

If seasonal sounds are the reason you are shopping, these current models have them built in:

  • Christmas: Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, Let It Snow and Ding Dong Merrily on High on the SS Series; Jingle Bells on the LRA-D1000.
  • Birthdays: Happy Birthday on the SS Series and the 13-sound Carlon chimes.
  • Game day and summer parties: Take Me Out to the Ballgame and The Yellow Rose of Texas on the 13-sound Carlon chimes.
  • Just for fun: dog bark, rooster crow, car horn and police siren on the LRA receivers; dog bark and “Hello, welcome” on the SS Series.

A different sound for each door

On the SS Series, LRA and ERA kits, each push button or door sensor you pair can play its own melody. Use one tune for the front door, another for the back door, and a third for a door sensor on the garage or shop entrance. Carlon chimes set the sound at the push button, so two Carlon buttons can also play different tunes.

Can I add my own recorded sounds?

Not on the doorbells we currently sell. The recordable doorbell we used to carry has been discontinued, and none of the current models accept custom recordings or MP3 files. If you want variety, the SS Series’ 58 built-in melodies is the closest option.
