What Does a Doorbell Extender Do?

A doorbell extender wires into your existing wired chime and sends a signal to wireless receivers in other rooms, so you can hear the doorbell anywhere.

Updated: October 15, 2026Original publish date: October 15, 2026

A doorbell extender lets you hear your existing wired doorbell in rooms where the chime is too quiet, such as a basement, garage, upstairs bedroom or back office.

A small transmitter wires into your wired chime. When someone presses the doorbell button, your wired chime rings as usual, and the transmitter sends a radio signal to one or more wireless receivers that you place around the house. The receivers play a melody, flash a strobe, or both.

Which extender kits are there?

  • ERA-EXKIT: ERA-EXTX transmitter and ERA-RXPG plug-in receiver with strobe. Up to 4,000 ft line of sight.
  • LRA-EX1000S: LRA-EXTX transmitter and LRA-DCRXS plug-in receiver with strobe. Up to 1,000 ft line of sight.
  • LRA-EX1000: LRA-EXTX-L transmitter and LRA-DCRX-L receiver, which runs on three C batteries. Up to 1,000 ft.

If you already own an ERA or LRA receiver, the transmitters are sold on their own: ERA-EXTX and LRA-EXTX-L.

Extenders work only with standard wired chimes. They do not work with video doorbells.
