What VA doorbell transformer do I need?
Start with the voltage your chime calls for, then pick enough VA (capacity) for the load. A 16V 10VA transformer is usually enough for one chime, one unlit button and a normal wire run. Step up to 15VA, like the T1615 16V 15VA transformer, for two chimes, lighted buttons, or wire runs over about 50 feet. Video doorbells usually need more, so check the doorbell maker's VA range. A transformer with a little more VA than needed causes no trouble; one with too little does.

Do video doorbells need a 16V or a 24V transformer?
Use a voltage that both the video doorbell and the chime accept. Many video doorbells list a range such as 16-24V AC, but many wired chimes are rated for 16V, so a 24V transformer can be wrong for the chime even when the doorbell accepts it. Where is my doorbell transformer?
It depends on where the installer put it. Common spots are the garage (near the electrical panel or the garage door opener), the basement or utility area near the panel or furnace, the attic on a rafter or junction box, and inside the wall behind or under the chime box. Can one transformer run two chimes?
Yes, if it has enough VA. A second chime roughly doubles the load when the button is pressed, and a 10VA transformer has little headroom for that. A 16V 15VA transformer such as the T1615 is made for two-chime systems, and the DH910 tri-volt transformer powers up to two low-voltage devices. Both chimes must also be rated for the transformer's voltage.

How can I tell if my doorbell transformer is failing or too small?
Common signs are a chime that buzzes or hums, a weak or partial ding, no ring at all, a transformer that runs hot, or a video doorbell that drops offline or reports low power. A multimeter on the transformer's low-voltage terminals will show whether the output is near its rated voltage. The input side is connected to household power, so turn off the breaker before working on it, or have an electrician replace it.
