How Far Does an SS Series Wireless Doorbell Reach?

SS Series doorbells are rated for up to 600 ft in open air. Walls, metal, masonry and interference reduce that range indoors.

Safeguard Supply SS Series doorbells and door alerts are rated for up to 600 ft between the transmitter (a push button or door contact) and the receiver. That number comes from open-air testing, with nothing between the two parts. Inside a building the real range is shorter.

What reduces the range?

  • Walls and floors. Each wall, floor or ceiling the signal crosses takes some range away. Brick, concrete, stucco and other masonry take away more than wood and drywall.
  • Metal. Metal doors, metal siding, aluminum, steel framing, appliances and shelving block the signal. The SS130 product page lists 50-150 ft of range when the signal has to pass metal security doors and walls.
  • Interference from other wireless devices.
  • Vehicles, shelving and dense trees between the button and the receiver.

How to get the most range

  • Test before you mount. Hold the button or door contact where it will go, plug the receiver into the outlet you plan to use, and trigger it.
  • If the signal does not reach, try a different outlet, or add an SS135 plug-in receiver in a room closer to the door. You can pair as many receivers as you need.
  • Avoid mounting the push button or door contact directly on metal when you can.

If the signal has to go through metal or masonry, or you need more distance, look at the ERA Series. The ERA-DCKIT is rated for up to 4,000 ft.
