Lighting Controls

Lighting controls switch a light for you, so it does not depend on someone remembering a wall switch. They automate a schedule or control a hard-to-reach fixture without rewiring a room. Most of the products here screw into an existing light socket or work with a lighting kit you already own.

What is in this section

• Dusk-to-dawn adapters: a photocell fits between the socket and the bulb and turns the light on at dusk and off at dawn. Good for porch, coach and post lights. The photocell adapters here are for incandescent bulbs and have a maximum wattage, so check both before ordering.
• Motion sensor light adapters: an adapter screws into the light socket and turns the light on when the sensor detects motion. Useful for floodlights, basements and attics. Some listings are the adapter only, for adding to an existing kit.
• Replacement remotes: transmitters for a compatible lighting control kit you already have.

Photocell, motion sensor or timer?

A photocell follows daylight, so it keeps up with the seasons without being reset. A motion sensor only turns the light on when someone is there, which suits security and utility lights. A plug-in timer runs on a fixed schedule and fits indoor lamps better than outdoor fixtures. For cordless lights with sensors built in, see battery-operated LED lights.
