Buying notes
Is this the right fit?
- Good fit when
- Use this when you need an additional compatible button or transmitter at a door, gate, counter, driveway, or other alert point.
- Look at another option when
- Choose a kit instead if you do not already have a compatible receiver. This transmitter sends the signal; it does not make the chime sound by itself.
- Range reality
- Check the listed compatibility and placement notes before ordering. Building layout often matters as much as the product rating.
- Setup note
- Mount the button or transmitter where it can detect the event and where its signal can reach the receiver. Pair it to the receiver, then set the tone or zone on the receiver side.
The RC3256R is not a general home-automation device. It is a Carlon wireless doorbell receiver meant to work with compatible Carlon wireless buttons and chime systems. That makes it useful when a current receiver needs to be replaced, or when you want another receiver in a second room so the signal is easier to hear.
Because this is a receiver-only product, compatibility is the main thing to verify before ordering. Plug-in receivers can be convenient because they do not require batteries and can be moved from room to room as long as you have a suitable outlet nearby. Published range can vary with walls and layout, so it is best to treat those numbers as a comparison point rather than a guarantee in every building.
Details to know

Q&A
Questions & Answers
Answers from our team for RC3256R Enhance Your Home with Carlon Plugin Receiver.
Does this unit replace the RC8253R unit which I have; probably 15 years old.
Good afternoon. As long as your current system was manufactured after 2001, all Carlon wireless products would be compatible with one another. You can find the manufactured by date located on a round QC sticker on your current receiver and/or transmitter. There will be several numbers on that sticker, the last two would be the manufactured by date. As long as they are after 01, the units would be compatible. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you, Customer Support Team 1800Doorbell

How do you get the cover off of the button case? It is ringing continuously and want to see if a connection or the battery has failed.
Please see the user manual for the push button: https://www.1800doorbell.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf/rc3301-wireless-button-carlon.pdf

How do you change the tune or tone on this unit?
Thank you for your question. The tune is changed at the wireless receiver. If the receiver is a push button, you press the dimple on the front of the button and scroll through the tunes and stopping at the desired melody.

Can I turn off the nightlight of the Carlon RC3256 (and then turn it back on)?
Good morning. The light on the RC3256 always stays on, there is no way to turn it off. If you are looking for a receiver without a nightlight, we would recommend the RC3730D. Thank you, Customer Support Team 1800Doorbell

Yes, it is compatible

My old plug-in chime (model 3250R, marked 'sold as RC3253') failed — will the RC3253 work as a replacement?
Yes, it will work. Just make sure any privacy codes you set (the little copper wires on the back) match on the new one.

I need a replacement for two Carlon Model RC8253R Plug-In chimes. My doorbell transmitter is a Carlon 4120T chime button. Will your RC3253 Carlon Plugin Wireless Door Chime Receiver work as a replacement?
Jim, Good afternoon and thank you for your inquiry. All Carlon wireless products are compatible, as long as your current system was manufactured after 2001. You can find the manufactured-by date located on a round QC sticker on your receiver and/or transmitter. The last two numbers on this sticker would be the manufactured-by date. For example, if your numbers were 1106, this would mean the system was manufactured in 2006 and would be compatible with what is out now. Thank you, Customer Support Team 1800Doorbell

I would like to replace a Carlon door bell extender model #RC8253R. Please direct me to this model, or another if it's compatible.
The RC3253 and the RC8253R are the same product. Click here to see the product to ensure it is the same one. You can purchase it here: https://www.1800doorbell.com/rc3253-wireless-plugin-add-on-door-chime.htm

Is the RC3253 compatible with a Dimango Extend-A-Bell transmitter (model 35001)?
This sounds like an issue with the doorbell transformer it's wired to — you may need an electrician to look into it.

Understanding Wireless Range: Published Specs vs. Real-World
Why Published Range Differs from Real-World Range When shopping for wireless doorbells, entrance alerts, driveway alarms, and other long-range wireless products, you’ll notice every product lists a maximum wireless range—typically stated as “up to X,000 feet.” For example, the Dakota Alert DCPA-4K-PLUS Driveway Alarm lists a range of “up to 5,000 feet.” It’s important to…
Can Two Push Buttons Play Different Sounds on a Wireless Chime Receiver
There are ways to cover multiple entrances when using a doorbell system. Click below to read the answer to the question. When we talk about using doorbell buttons for different doors we are typically referring to changing the tune a receiver (or multiple receivers) play when a paired button is pressed. Each manufacturer has a slightly…
Find a Lighted Wireless Doorbell Push Button
Most Wireless buttons are NOT available lighted as they would require power 24/7 and drain the batteries too quickly. The only illuminated wireless buttons we are aware of are the LRA-PBTX and the ERA-PBTX. This wireless transmitter features a LED bulb that lights up the center push button whenever the visitor presses it, indicating a successful transmission. The ERA-PBTX consumes…
