Doorbell Impressions

in wired doorbells

Surfing the Internet opens an amazing world. For example, the other day, I was surfing for information on wireless doorbells and discovered that an amazing variety of these devices exist.  Trying to get a handle of the differences and how those differences affect me, I searched for reviews of wireless doorbells.  Of course I found some blogs, and I found some cursory reviews such as “this a great doorbell”, which doesn’t really help me much.  I even found silly discussion forums surrounding the issue of whether or not one should ring a doorbell or not after toilet-papering someone’s house! (Obviously, this was a site for teenagers.)

However, I stumbled across something interesting which I never would have thought of had I not been surfing. It was an article where an author was interviewed about his new book. The author is Andrew Losowsky and his newest book is called The Doorbells of Florence. From my quick read of the article, the author was traveling in Florence and found an interesting doorbell and took a photograph of it as a memento of Florence.  However, since he noticed that doorbell, he began noticing others and soon found himself with lots of photographs about doorbells.  This lead to his wonderment of the people who lived in these homes and the lives they live.  (His book is a collection of fictional stories about his imagined lives of those people.)

I’m not entirely sure I will actually read or buy the book, but I stop to think that in a way, our doorbells do reflect each of us in some way. For example, someone with a desire for an immaculately decorated house will more than likely choose a doorbell which blends with their décor, such as a wooden shelf which can be decorated, or a doorbell receiver which can be painted, or wallpaper inserted, to coordinate with the décor. Someone who spends a lot of time outside may have a portable doorbell which can be carried everywhere in the yard.  Some people always have a very quiet home and may opt for a flashing light doorbell or one which makes a lamp flash on and off. Maybe your home is very traditional or contains a lot of antiques.  You may want a traditional chime doorbell with the hanging tubes.  Very festive people may opt for a doorbell which is customizable in all aspects, including being able to record your own songs, voice or other sounds. Someone with a very basic doorbell may be someone who is  very basic himself, or maybe someone who just doesn’t care about doorbells!

Whatever your personality or lifestyle, there are many doorbells available styles from which to choose. Whether or not you choose to make one reflective of your personal style, taste of lifestyle, is and of itself, reflective of who you are!
