Ring-a-ding-ding……you’ve come a long way, baby!

in Doorbells and Door Chimes, wireless doorbells

Doorbells have come a long way since they first stepped onto the scene about 175 years ago.  There are so many options to choose from, it boggles the mind.  I’m sure everyone has encountered a doorbell, or twenty, in their time, but how many people have put much thought into them until they have become homeowners themselves?  Doorbells come in a plethora of options, including wired, wireless or mechanical, but the right option cannot be determined except by the one who will be using it.  A handyman (or handywoman) may know how to wire a doorbell, or at least follow the instructions well, while one not-so-handy may opt to purchase a wireless doorbell which is mounted easily and has replaceable batteries.  Some models are even plug-in ready so installation is practically foolproof.

Deciding which type of doorbell to install is not rocket science. Pick the one that you will be able to install.  What may require a bit of rocket science is selecting your exact style.  There is a mind-dizzying array of choices from bells, buzzers and chimes, to pre-recorded music, voices or other sounds.  I was recently shopping for a doorbell as my baby-sitter’s buzzer is non-existent.   Many mornings I’ve had to bang quite loudly on the wooden door or glass to try and wake her up as I am her first “customer” every morning.  After several knuckle-pounding attempts, she finally awakens and opens the door for us to come in out of the cold.  While waiting, I often think about buying her a replacement doorbell, and just as often, I forget to do it.  I have admitted defeat when it comes to remembering things, but luckily, these thoughts eventually return to me, usually in the middle of the night.  That’s where the internet becomes my savior.

Many web-sites offer doorbells and I can’t believe the options now available. In addition to the difference in how they operate and sounds they make, they come in so many decorative styles it makes their selection quite personal. Perhaps she wants a simple one that is small discreet, or an ornately decorative wooden one, such as the one which doubles as a shelf?  Doorbells can now cater to your style and your needs.

As I have only been using my baby-sitter for a month, I don’t think I yet know her personal likes to make such a selection for her.
